“The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.” – William Arthur Ward

Dear MUBS family,

Our nation’s seems to be a story of unending suffering and hardship; for over two years we have been hoping for better times to come, for a dawn to follow the darkest hour of this night.  In the midst of this bleak scene, MUBS remained faithful to its mission in offering a hand to those most in need, committed to “light a candle instead of cursing the darkness.”  When the world shut down, we ensured that our students have the necessary means to be able to graduate on time; facing a debilitating financial crisis, we increased our financial aid assistance; after the Beirut Port explosion, MUBS students and staff were among the first on the scene to assist the victims, providing medication and shelter to those impacted by the tragic event.  The past two years have tested our character and resolve, and I am proud of the resounding commitment to the MUBS mission that we have all shown.

Graduation Ceremony 2021

Dear students and colleagues, as we wrap up the summer semester and prepare for a new academic year, I especially would like to congratulate the class of 2021 for their perseverance and resilience in the face of unprecedented difficulties.  I am also thrilled to inform you that our Graduation Committee is working diligently to organize the Commencement Ceremony during the latter part of September 2021, after being unable to organize this most pleasant of occasions in 2020 due to the pandemic.  The format and schedule of the ceremony, as well as the logistics and other relevant details will be communicated to our graduates in the coming days, as the Graduation Committee continues to monitor the situation to ensure we follow the safest measures that would allow us to celebrate this memorable event.

Fall 2021

Our preparations for the new academic year are well on track, conforming to the Ministry of Education and Higher Education’s recommendation of a blended learning experience.  All classes, therefore, will continue to be offered online, with on-campus presence for laboratory sessions, practical training, and exams.  The details of the on-campus sessions will be communicated by each academic Department based on their course work, allowing students the flexibility needed during this uncertain time, prioritizing our students’ and staff’s well-being, while providing an effective learning environment.

As we navigate these difficult times, I take heart and pride in the fact that MUBS faculty and staff were able to thrive and achieve success despite the challenges.  Among these achievements, we celebrated faculty receiving international recognition for their leadership in research and teaching skills; alumni taking on leadership positions in their disciplines; MUBS students receiving accolades and awards for their creative work in international competitions; we celebrated Times Higher Education Impact Rankings recognition for our contributions to society as a whole, by ranking in the top 200 universities in the world in combating poverty, and among the top 300 universities in gender equality.

Time and again, the MUBS community has shown the strength, faith, and resilience that have distinguished our institution.  Ours is a commitment rooted in the service of our community, our nation, and our mission.  Borrowing from the words of William Arthur Ward, rather than being pessimists complaining about the wind, or optimists expecting better days, we continue to be the realists adapting to the storm and navigating into calmer waters and a brighter future.

Sincerely,
